Watch: Robert Abela Says ‘Establishment Has Mobilised All Of Its Tentacles’ Against Labour
Prime Minister Robert Abela has urged the public to use the upcoming MEP and local council elections to send a message against the “establishment”, which he warned has “mobilised all of its tentacles” to condition the result.
Despite surveys showing the PL is well on course for its seventh successive commanding electoral victory, Abela insisted that he doesn’t form part of the establishment himself.
“The election was about what sort of Europe and localities we want but it has now taken on a new dimension,” he told a press conference.
“The people must send a clear message on whether the sovereign right to take decisions should lie with the public or the establishment. On 8th June, the public will be bestowed with the responsibility to safeguard their own sovereign right to decide what future they want for the country, and not an unelected establishment that operates behind the curtains and that doesn’t enjoy public trust.”
Abela dismissed suggestions that his criticism of magistrate Gabriella Vella’s handling of the recently concluded Vitals inquiry means he is undermining the judiciary
“The establishment believes that the people don’t have a right to scrutinise certain institutions, but I disagree,” he said. “Everyone, from myself downwards and including magistrates and judges, should be subject to public scrutiny.”
Do you think Robert Abela is fighting the establishment or is part of the establishment himself?
