Watch: Robert Abela Tells Isabelle Bonnici Her Son’s Death A ‘Wake-Up Call For Malta’
Prime Minister Robert Abela has said Jean Paul Sofia’s death was a “wake-up call for Malta” in his first public comments to the construction victim’s mother following the publication of a damning public inquiry.
Lovin Malta asked Abela what his message to Isabelle Bonnici is after the public inquiry, which he had initially resisted and voted against in parliament, proved her correct in terms of concerns about serious shortcomings in the construction industry.
“I was clear to Isabelle Bonnici that I want justice to be served,” Abela said.
“It will be served through the implementation of the public inquiry recommendations and through justice with the family.”
“I believe that Isabelle, her husband and Jean Paul’s memory were a wake-up call for the nation in the sense that, after 50 years of the construction industry being left to its own devices, the time has come to say ‘enough’.”
“Unfortunately a youth had to die for that earthquake to take place.”
Abela insisted that the construction industry needs to have higher standards.
“This is what I believe in. I don’t like amateurism and there is no more room for the ‘free for all’ or ‘u iwa’ attitude.”
What do you make of Abela’s response?
