Just hours after his death, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced plans to nominate former PN deputy leader Robert Arrigo for the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika national award.

Abela regarded Arrigo as a major contributor in a variety of sectors, including sports, tourism and politics.

“I know he did not like titles,” Abela said with a smile, “however I am going to be proposing that his work is recognised on Republic Day.”

The award ceremony for Ġieħ ir-Repubblika occurs on Republic Day, which is held on 13th December.

Robert Arrigo was a Nationalist Party MP and the former deputy leader of the opposition, having served in his position for almost five years.

He had been undergoing several sessions of chemotherapy recently as he battled cancer throughout the last months.
