Former PL MP Silvio Parnis was laid to rest this morning after passing away following a battle with cancer.

Parnis’ funerary cortege passed in front of the PL’s headquarters, where several PL activists and MPs gathered to pay their final respects, before moving on to the Kristu Re Basilica in Paola.

Parnis spent 24 years as an MP but didn’t contest the election earlier this year. In 2020, he announced he was stepping down from politics after he was left out of Prime Minister Robert Abela’s Cabinet.

Several politicians from all sides of the political spectrum have paid tribute to Parnis, recognising him as a champion for the vulnerable.

Yesterday, the PL formally nominated Parnis for a Republic Day state honour in recognition of his grassroots work over the years.

“He was a beloved politician who always prioritised the interests of others over his own interests, without looking at political colours,” the PL said. “He practiced social justice in his daily life, was always close to the vulnerable and worked a lot with elderly people.”
