Watch: Sliema Hit With Rat Infestation As Uncollected Waste Rots Away

Sliema residents are up in arms over the garbage that has plagued their town, attracting dozens of rats.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta from a Sliema resident shows a handful of rats scurrying near overflowing garbage in a public waste bin on Tigne Street.

“This is the way we are living in Sliema day and night in every street,” Maria Borg, 42 told this newsroom.

Borg, a Sliema resident and owner of two stores in the seaside town, said she is afraid to walk on the pavements.

“I promise what I sent you is a fraction of what we see every day,” she said, adding that she took these videos after seeing 12 rats.

PN MP Graham Bencini warned that the situation is not only affecting Sliema, but also other localities like St. Julians and Swieqi.

Bencini said the respective mayors have been requesting support from the government about the huge waste issues in these areas to no avail.

“It is a fact that these locations, among others, have become dirty (in addition to being very noisy for the residents), and contrary to what people may think, our Local Councils do not have the authority to address the situation. The Government must address it and must do so immediately.”

It is a great shame how these locations have been neglected in recent years. It is useless to make laws but not enforce them. Everyone continues to do what they want and this is the result.

What do you make of this situation?
