Watch: St Julian’s Councillor Explains Why Having Kids Can Boost, Not Harm, Your Career

PL St Julian’s councillor David Caruana has rejected the idea that having children damages your career, insisting that the opposite is actually true.

In a powerful intervention on Popolin, Caruana said he once held this mindset himself, and when his wife becomes pregnant for the first time, he panicked that it would harm his job and future career plans.

“However, I ended up realising that having children actually strengthened both my career prospects and my wife’s.”

Caruana’s argument is that becoming a parent gives you a sense of purpose that, in turn, makes it more likely for you to go the extra mile to advance your career.

“If you don’t have children, you might spend your money on holidays – perhaps you would go on four holidays a year – but children give you a reason to spend your money.”

“If you’re targeting a certain position and don’t have children, you might decide to put it on the back burner because you’re comfortable as you are.”

“However, if you have children, you have to reach your goals and targets – not for yourself, but for someone else. It means you will be more tired and stressed, but I believe you will be happier too.”
