As the travel industry reeled from the impact of a faulty cybersecurity software update, Maltese AI expert Angelo Dalli was at the Malta International Airport reflecting on the “irony” of the situation.

“The irony of being stuck at the airport while working on AI that can help prevent and predict such disruptions is not lost,” the Umnai founder said.

Although some people have used today’s incident to warn of the risks of the increasing global reliance on technology, Dalli believes the answer lies in embracing AI.

“I hope that AI will help decrease the response times and increase resiliency of the systems as things progress,” he said.

Around 85% of flights from the Malta International Airport were impacted by today’s IT outage, which impacted Microsoft Windows’ operating system.

This followed a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, who have apologised for the disruption.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected,” CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said.

“We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on.”

“As noted earlier, the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts.”

“For the latest information that we will continuously update, please refer to the CrowdStrike website, my posts on LinkedIn, and my posts on X.”

“I will continue to provide updates to our community and the industry as they become available.”
