Tax refunds, reforms and promises of social housing were all on the agenda today as Prime Minister Robert Abela’s addressed hundreds on International Worker’s Day.

Not short on promises but skimming over details, Abela pledges a slew of reforms, including better planning laws in place of ones that allow developers to proceed with projects even when appeals are pending.

“Did it ever make sense that planning laws allow construction work to go ahead when the permit is being contested?” he said, speaking to the crowds waving red banners.

In terms of better reforms, he also mentioned that his government will build more social housing, provide better schemes for buyers and support pensioners.

He also emphasized the environment, saying it was a “top priority” to reflect what people value as the economy progresses strongly.

A consultation for a new open space in Cospicua will kick off on Thursday, and 15 projects will also be unveiled later this month under Project Green.

The future is bright, Ablea finished, appropriating an iconic slogan by Don Mintoff:  “L-ewwel u qabel kollox”.
