Watch: Taxi Drones Could Become a Reality in Malta in a Few Years, Says Transport Malta CEO
Malta may soon see taxi drones soaring through its skies, Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia has announced.
Interviewed by Lovin Malta’s Tim Diacono, Farrugia expressed optimism about the potential for drone technology to revolutionise mobility and logistics in the country.
“I am a big believer in new technology, and we must work towards a future where drones are part of our daily lives,” Farrugia said.
While acknowledging that the technology is still evolving, Farrugia noted that taxi drones are already being tested in places like Abu Dhabi and that he has seen the technology with his own eyes at fairs and conventions he attended.
Farrugia stressed that the introduction of taxi drones must be coupled with a regulatory framework to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
“In the past, we used to rely on helicopters to film and monitor traffic, but drones can now perform this work more efficiently,” he said.
He added that Malta is well-positioned to promote and test drone technologies due to the short routes between Malta and Gozo.
Other countries have already made moves towards introducing taxi drones, with the UK government planning to launch them by 2026.
