Watch: Taxpayers Shouldn’t Fund Political Parties, Abela Tells Borg

Prime Minister Robert Abela told Opposition Leader Alex Borg that he disagrees with the idea of the state funding political parties.
“We will disagree on the issue of the funding of political parties,” Abela told Borg during a meeting at Labour’s HQ.
“This side believes that taxpayer money should be used to strengthen the common good and the finances of households. However, we should debate this respectfully and I believe we can send a strong signal to society in this regard.”
Borg has pledged to prioritise the financing of political parties once Parliament reconvenes after its summer break.
In comments to journalists after the meeting, the PN Leader said that, contrary to what PL media house ONE reported, his intention isn’t to force the public to pay for his party’s debt.
“We need political parties to remain free from all forms of influence, so that the national interest is always placed at the heart of our decisions. This isn’t just about state funding – it’s a complex law that addresses several aspects.”
