Renowned English actress Vanessa Kirby has showered Malta with praise as a film destination while discussing her experience working on the island for the new Napoleon film.

Kirby, who is perhaps best known for her role in The Crown as a young Princess Margaret, plays Napoleon’s wife Josephine Bonaparte in Ridley Scott’s new epic about the French emperor.

Speaking to TVM, she said she had a “wonderful” time shooting Naploeon in Malta.

“As soon as I got there we had the most wonderful greeting. Everyone was so lovely and the film crews were amazing,” she said.

“Ridley Scott loves the crews there. It was really special because Ridley and Joaquin Phoenix had shot Gladiator there, so 21 years later they were back there, shooting in your country, and I had a wonderful time.”

“You can really tell when a country is geared towards film and film production. I can understand why so many crews and film productions would want to come over and film in Malta because it’s just so well-adapted to making films and the landscape so epic.”

“You can have Gladiator because it can pass as Ancient Rome, it also passes as Corsica or Parisian prisons in Napoleon. Theres just so many things it can do. It was a really wonderful and clam atmosphere and the people are much friendlier than in England.”
