A new 50-second video revealing the moment when European border agents come across an adrift rubber dinghy with one man in a critical condition and the body of another man has been released.

A still image of the video, which was released by the European Union’s border agency Frontex on Wednesday, had previously shown the desperate attempts by the two men to reach Europe at the height of summer’s heat.

But the new video reveals more details, as well as the procedure followed once the dinghy was spotted by a Frontex plane patrolling the central Mediterranean sea.

Once the dinghy was spotted, Frontex contacted Malta’s rescue coordination centre, initiating the rescue operation that included both a helicopter and a patrol boat.

Two rescue swimmers were sent down to the scene, where they found the dead body, and the man’s companion in a critical condition, and hoisted him up to the helicopter to be rushed for treatment.
