WATCH: There Is A Maggot-Filled Stream Of Black Discharge Flowing Directly Into Kalkara Sea

A video showing a pipe leading from a structure on the shoreline near Fort Ricasoli into the Kalkara sea has re-ignited locals’ anger over the long-standing environmental and health issue.

The video, which follows the pipe from the on-land structure to the sea, shows revolting scenes that include a large amounts of maggots congregating on the dark liquid being discharged just meters away from a public bay.

Liane Gatt, who submitted the video to Lovin Malta, said this video is even more reason to “be concerned about the blatant carelessness with which environmental issues are being handled in Malta”.

“This video was filmed last week in Kalkara and it shows a drain pipe deliberately placed in such a way as to allow whatever sewage/waste to flow out to sea. While recording, upon closer inspection, besides the sharp disgusting odours, one can notice also that the affected area is full of what seem to be maggots. This is a public place. Families come here. Children come here or in the surrounding areas to swim. How can this be allowed to happen?” she asked.

The foul discharge has been going on for at least five years

The Times Of Malta had reported a black effluent being discharged back in 2015. Waste Oils Limited, the company reportedly responsible for the runoff, said they couldn’t explain what the liquid was at the time, and couldn’t take any further action at that time.

“It’s been like that for years. Five year ago I reported it and when the police arrived on the scene, the liquid stopped. They are taking the piss,” said one man familiar with the scene.

With many people losing patience over this nasty black liquid that has remained unexplained for years, there may only be one option left for some.

“For years this has fallen on deaf ears; but I am hoping, given the recent focus on environmental issues, that this is taken seriously before more drastic measures are considered: submitting a formal complaint to the European Commission,” said Liane Gatt.
