Watch: Throwback To When Konrad Mizzi Said Air Malta Could Fly To New York And Mumbai By 2023
If Konrad Mizzi’s plans had worked out, Air Malta would be flying to faraway destinations like New York, Toronto and Mumbai right now.
A video clip from a 2019 interview with the former Tourism Minister shows how dramatically Air Malta’s strategy has changed in just a few years.
“If the country wants to increase its economic growth, we need better connectivity. We need to look forward and dream that, in to three to four years’ time, why shouldn’t we have flights to New York, Toronto, or Mumbai?” Mizzi asked.
Now, with Air Malta on the brink of closure and a new national airline set to replace it, minister Clyde Caruana has made it clear that ‘Air Malta 2.0’ will absolutely not look beyond its main markets.
“There is no more room and time for experimentation,” he said on Popolin. “Many mistakes were made but we’re not going experiment. Air Malta has become leaner and will fly to 17 airports, European capitals and major cities.”
“Thanks to the volume of people, the demand and sometimes the lack of competition, the planes will be full up.”
Air Malta’s 17 routes will be as follows: Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Catania, Dusseldorf, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris CDG, Paris Orly, Prague, Rome, Vienna and Zurich.
New York, Mumbai and the dream of Air Malta flying out of Europe will have to be put on hold for the foreseeable future.
