Former PN minister Tonio Fenech has come out in favour of a proposal to extend school opening hours, but said these extra hours should be utilised for children to do their homework and extracurricular activities.

During a debate on Jon Mallia’s Il-Każin, Fenech said the Malta Union of Teachers “pounced on him” when he had brought this proposal up in the past but that he has no problem with their criticism now he is no longer in politics.

“We invested a lot of money in school facilities, but schools only stay open till 1pm or 2:30pm, after which children go home to do their homework and other extracurricular activities, and everyone gets stuck in traffic.”

Fenech said that extending school opening hours doesn’t mean that schoolteachers will have to work longer hours. Instead, he said that extracurricular teachers should be integrated into the education system.

“Rather than children running from place to place, they will be focused at school, with balanced time for them to do their homework too,” he said. “That way, when they go home they will have proper quality time, rather than everyone scattered around.”

“That way we will reduce traffic on the roads and solve the problem of parents working till 5pm and children finishing school at 2:30pm.”

PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis recently came out in favour of extending school opening hours following a recommendation by professors Anna Borg and Liberato Camilleri.

However, both Education Minister Clifton Grima and the Nationalist Party quickly shot down this proposal.

The full debate will air tomorrow on GO Tokis.
