Watch: Unamused Labour MPs Analyse Fake Cheques PN MPs Threw At Them In Parliament

Two young Labour MPs seemed distinctly unamused as they picked up a false cheque their PN counterparts had flung at them at the end of a heated Parliament session this week.

Parliament’s cameras captured the moment PL MPs Naomi Cachia and Omar Farrugia picked up a ‘cheque’ and analysed it. They were clearly unimpressed with the stunt, and Cachia could be seen shaking her head, while Farrugia nodding slowly before removing the cheque.

The ‘cheques’ for €400 million, which included the words “Ħallas Ġaħan”, were flung by PN MPs at the end of a heated debate over whether the government should sue Steward for the €400 million in public funds they received over the years.

Prime Minister Robert Abela insisted that while the government will “chase” Steward for every last cent it was given that didn’t translate into the promised medical services, the quoted €400 million figure includes funds that were paid to workers and that were invested in the Gozo and Karin Grech hospitals.

The debate on Thursday was possibly the most heated Parliament session this legislature, and Speaker Anġlu Farrugia had to suspend the session at one point after Prime Minister Robert Abela and PN MP Adrian Delia accused each other of lyings.

It ended with the Opposition kicking up a storm after Farrugia allowed the government to present a significant amendment to its motion, with PN MPs throwing false cheques across the House and exiting to a cheering protest.

Both parties have tried to portray the Parliament developments in their favour.

PN leader Bernard Grech issued a message to the nation today to pledge that the party will stand firm in its fight to ensure the millions paid to Steward are returned to the public coffers.

“We will keep on speaking, even when the try to stop us from speaking in Parliament,” he said. “After government, with the Speaker’s complicity, did their utmost to stop us from speaking, we decided to speak in the village square of the people.”

Meanwhile, Cachia decried the behaviour of Opposition MPs as “dangerous” and PL MP and CEO Randolph De Battista described it as “shameful”.

“After Robert Abela started exposing Adrian Delia’s deceit, a whole commotion arose. We could see PN MPs in a state of delirium, doing their utmost to stop the Prime Minister from speaking and displaying disrespect to the Speaker the likes of which I have never seen before,” De Battista said.
