Statistician Vince Marmarà warned that Malta will face a major economic crisis if foreign workers decide to leave the country en masse.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, Marmarà said that the integration of foreigners into Maltese society must be viewed as a crucial policy.

“If they integrate, many of them will feel comfortable forming part of Maltese society and culture,” he said. “If they aren’t integrated and, God forbid, they all decide to leave, there will be huge economic and work crises.”

“The fact that the Maltese won’t want to work several jobs will become a major issue because there won’t be enough workers, particularly since our birth rate is low.”

Marmarà said that consistent findings from his annual State of the Nation survey about how Maltese citizens view foreigners should be seen as cause for concern.

“These surveys consistently show that a third of people don’t want foreigner, not even to work the jobs they aren’t willing to work themselves,” he said.

“This is concerning and requires deep thought. We’ve seen a strong (anti-foreigner) movement in Europe but what will happen? I think that many politicians who are pushing these policies ultimately also know that the moment you target foreigners, the economy will suffer a blow and the people will suffer.”
