Watch: ‘We Don’t Have A North Star’ – Jon Mallia Breaks Down What Is Missing From Maltese Politics
Renowned podcaster Jon Mallia believes that the absence of a “north star”, a grand narrative and direction that people can get excited about, is the root of several problems within Maltese politics.
“Malta doesn’t have a direction because it doesn’t have a North Star it can aim towards,” Mallia told Lovin Malta, bringing up independence, freedom EU accession and Labour’s Malta Tagħna Loll movement as examples of previously successful visions.
“There is no grand narrative that we can all participate in, one that energises you to feel that you are part of a movement that can change history. These things really resonate with people.”
Instead, he warned that people are being fed a confusing and contradictory style of politics.
“For example, the PN is a conservative party, but there are also people within PN who believe that. abortion is a fundamental right,” he said. “It’s either one or the other. I’m not taking a position about abortion but I’m just saying its a bit schizophrenic. This lack of direction and grand narrative is the fundamental hardship of politics right now.”
