Watch: ‘We Have A Diversity Problem’ – Peppi Azzopardi Delves Into Olympics Last Supper Controversy
Delving into the Olympics ‘Last Supper’ controversy, Peppi Azzopardi warned that the stunt shows the world has problems accepting diversity from several angles.
Azzopardi started by challenging the French ambassador to Malta, who responded to Archbishop Charles Scicluna’s complaint about the stunt by saying France embraces free thought.
“A Muslim French athlete wanted to wear a hijab in the opening of the Games but she wasn’t allowed. What kind of freedom is this? French schools also ban crucifixes and other religious symbols entirely. Does embracing diversity mean doing away with all these symbols?”
“Rather than accepting the crucifix and, if needs be, other religious symbols so we can learn how to co-exist with each other, they are doing away with everything.”

“If it’s offending you, it’s not my fault but yours. You must learn to co-exist with different opinions and beliefs. It’s the same principle as when some people say we shouldn’t say Happy Christmas to ensure no one gets offended.”
“I’m a vegetarian, and I felt offended when I saw an advert promoting Tyson Butcher, so should we ban it? No, we have to learn how to live with each other.”
Azzopardi then brought the argument closer to home and challenged people offended by the stunt to ask themselves whether the real reason behind their offence was the presence of drag queens.
“If that’s the case, then we have a problem with diversity. They are people like us and we shouldn’t see them as a threat, but rather apologise for all they suffered in the past. I’m criticising France for lacking diversity, but we should also look in the mirror ourselves.”
