Watch: ‘We Keep Asking For More’ – GWU Head Warns Maltese Workers Risk Burnout

GWU secretary general Josef Bugeja warned that Maltese workers are feeling the pressure of mounting expectations to be more efficient and productive.

“The Maltese are hardworking people but we keep demanding more and more of them,” Bugeja said on the TVM show Fehma Jew Fatt.

“We keep asking them to improve their efficiency and productivity because competition is globalised.”

In particular, he said many workers still don’t feel they enjoy the right to disconnect, with people contacting them for work-related matters after work hours.

“Everyone is constantly connected to their jobs and this is impacting people’s lives,” he warned.

“We often see workers suffering from serious anxiety, tiredness and burnout, and I’m not only talking about manual workers but middle and senior management too.”

“The demands placed on workers have increased.”

And while the EU’s Working Time Directive states that workers shouldn’t be forced to work over 48 hours a week, Bugeja pointed out that this doesn’t apply for people with two jobs.

“You can work 40 hours at one job and 40 hours at another,” he pointed out.

“That’s also why we’re calling for a pilot four-day week project without loss of pay.”
