PN MP and MEP candidate David Agius heaped praise on independent candidates and called for an update to Malta’s general election system to make it easier for them to get elected to Parliament.

During a debate on Jon Mallia’s Il-Patruni Jistaqsu event, Agius departed from the PN’s rhetoric against independent candidates and praised the likes of Arnold Cassola, Conrad Borg Manché, Edwin Vassallo and Simon Mercieca.

“In the past, independents might have been viewed, at least in my eyes, as being there to make a joke out of politics, but nowadays we have much more serious independents,” he said.

“They’re not the sort of candidates we used to watch on TV to have a laugh in the past. We’ve levelled up and this must be reflected in our general election rules.”

Agius proposed slashing the number of electoral districts from 13 to six and allowing candidates to contest on four districts, up from the current maximum of two.

“We need to mature as a nation, it will be tough for the big parties but shouldn’t both of them agree that there should be at least one other voice in Parliament that is different from the two big parties? Must we only have two blocks?”

Will you vote for an independent candidate this weekend?
