Watch: We Live In A Concrete Jungle And It’s A Shame, Maltese Scout Tells Parliament

In a special Parliament session, sixteen-year-old scout Andre Micallef urged the government to invest more in promoting outdoor sports activities.

“I think it’s important to start providing more grants for outdoor sports; thats how we can make children feel part of the environment and the world,” Andre Micallef said.

“I am a climber and a scout and I like walking but we don’t have resources for these sports here. We don’t have resources to encourage children to see our beautiful world with their own eyes. Instead we have a concrete jungle, which is a shame.”

Micallef, who is part of the MFWS Children’s Hub, got to speak in Parliament as part of a special climate change conference organised by PN MP and Shadow Climate Change Minister Eve Borg Bonello, where youths, children, activists and scientists got to address MPs.

In his speech, he also warned that, despite being free of charge, public transport is nowhere near efficient enough.

“It takes me two hours and a half to come to Valletta and it will take me another two hours to go home; this isn’t the right way towards sustainability.”

He also urged Malta to invest in nuclear energy, an idea that was floated by former Education Minister Evarist Bartolo a few years ago.

“Germany used to use nuclear energy, which is one of the most sustainable means of energy production out there, but people didn’t want it because they thought it was dangerous. However, it is actually one of the safest and most pro-environment means of energy production.”

Should Malta invest more in outdoor sports?
