Watch: We Wanted To Shock People… And It Worked, Bernard Grech Says Of PN’s Protest Poster

A red poster displaying a clenched first to promote the PN’s upcoming protest was intended to shock people and get them talking about the demonstration, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said.

“This design attracted several comments – some liked it, some didn’t and some were scared,” Grech said in a new interview with Lovin Malta. “However, it had a shock effect and it therefore reached more people.”

Rife with left-wing symbolism, the poster proved controversial among PN activists and supporters, who felt the party was moving too far down the left, as well as Moviment Graffitti activists, who accused the party of copying their style

However, Grech played down these concerns, stating that the raised fist is “just a symbol” and that the poster was intended to attract public attention.

“We managed to attract attention and now it’s important for everyone to join us in Valletta next Sunday at 3pm. Rather than discussing the poster design, let’s discuss people’s realities.”

The protest, which will be Grech’s first since becoming PN leader two years ago, will focus on the deteriorating quality of life in matters such as the cost of living and overdevelopment.

Asked whether he is expecting a big turnout, the PN leader said the most important thing is that the party is giving people a platform to express their anger and disagreement with the government.

“It’s not just an issue of numbers but that we are going to Valletta to give people a platform to speak out,” he said.

“Rather than just grumbling, speaking on social media and WhatsApp groups and allowing editorials to write about how the government isn’t acting properly on several fronts, we are giving a chance to people to say that things must change. The government must start caring about people.”
