Watch: We Will Keep On Stopping You, PL’s Steve Ellul Tells Roberta Metsola After ‘Dangerous Spin’ Warning

Labour MEP candidate Steve Ellul has come out strongly against Roberta Metsola after the European Parliament President published a video to warn of “dangerous” political spin against her from the PL.

“Roberta Metsola said that the people of Europe should finance war through their taxes, but yesterday the Labour Party stopped her,” Ellul said.

“Rather than correcting her mistakes, she repeated the same thing and decided to attack Labourites and the Prime Minister. Roberta Metsola got offended because we stopped her, but I assure her that we will keep on stopping her.”

Earlier this week, Metsola urged the EU to spend more money on defence to “prepare for any eventuality”.

The EU Parliament President spoke to Politico after US presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested he would “encourage” Russia to attack NATO members that don’t meet their financial obligations.

However, Metsola insisted that these comments should in no way be interpreted as suggesting that she is advocating for Europe to go to war with Russia.

Instead, she said she was referring to joint procurements, defence against cyberattacks, protecting crucial infrastructure, and protecting fishermen in waters that aren’t under any country’s control.

“PL exponents are lying that I am calling for war. Not only is it ridiculous but it is dangerous,” she said. “It’s as though, all of a sudden, they forgot all about the Armed Forces of Malta and don’t want them to receive EU funds. Or perhaps, they don’t know the difference between attack and defense.”

Ellul countered this by warning that Metsola’s friends “want to send Maltese soldiers to jail”, a reference to Repubblika’s controversial 2020 police complaint against the AFM for failing to rescue migrants at sea.

Do you think the EU should increase its defence budget?
