Watch: ‘Where Are The Academics?’ Bernard Grech Raises Alarm Over Intellectual Silence
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has called out the vast majority of Malta’s academic class for opting to remain silent about major national issues.
“They might get offended by what I’m about to say but where are the university academics?” Grech questioned during a NET TV interview.
“We have hundreds of academics but only a couple of them speak out, whereas in other countries academics are among the most vociferous people in society.”
The PN leader also called out people in the business class who are scared to speak out out of fear of losing government contracts.
“You can’t just keep looking at your patch. No matter how much money you’re making, we’re talking about the reality of the country and the future of your children.”
Amidst poor polling numbers indicating another electoral trashing at the June elections and continuous questions about his leadership, Grech warned his doubters that there can be no quick-fix solution to the party’s woes.
“Even before I became PN leader, I always said that neither I nor the party has all the solutions. I understood that this country is on the decline and we know who is to blame for this, but its fortunes won’t be turned around because a messiah will fall out of the sky and immediately make the PN perfect.”
“It didn’t happen in the past, it didn’t happen when I became leader and it won’t happen if I am no longer leader. No one will fall out of the sky and solve every problem. The people, myself included, must understand that they must see how to contribute themselves. We all must redeem the country.”
