Adrian Delia challenged Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna to “face the people” and resign in light of criminal charges of fraud and misappropriation in connection with the Vitals-Steward hospital deal.

In a fiery speech at a PN protest yesterday, Delia reminded people that Scicluna had said in 2018 that a taxi driver in South America had spoken to him about the state of corruption in Malta.

Scicluna – who was Finance Minister at the time – had used the example to accuse government critics of sullying Malta’s reputation overseas by spreading “false allegations”.

“He told us how surprised he was when a South American taxi driver told him about corruption in Malta. However, he wasn’t surprised when he negotiated to increase his own salary as Central Bank Governor from €80,000 to €120,000,” Delia cried out.

“Where is Edward Scicluna? Come out and face the people! Put our minds at rest and resign from the Central Bank because you are harming the country’s reputation.”

Earlier today, Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated his trust in Scicluna by arguing that every criminal suspect must benefit from the “presumption of innocence”.
