Watch: ‘Where Is The Metro?’ – Grech Pokes Holes In Traffic Reduction Plan

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech criticised the government for not including a metro in its recent traffic reduction plan.

“This is a tired government led by a weak Prime Minister who isn’t focused on your problems,” Grech told a political rally. “It promises a lot but barely delivers on anything.”

“Where is the metro in this grand plan? First they promised it before the election and spent millions to try and convince you that it’s happening and now it doesn’t even feature as a footnote in their grand plan.”

Two years ago, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed that the metro proposal has been deprioritised, although it hasn’t been completely shelved.

It didn’t feature in the 18-month traffic reduction plan that was launched by Transport Minister Chris Bonett this week and which includes several short-to-medium term measures intended to alleviate the problem.

Measures include a €25,000 offer to drivers to give up their driving licenses, an annual €1,500 offer to 17-year-olds to ride mopeds instead of applying for a driving license, designated carpooling spaces at the university, new bus routes, new park and ride facilities, public parking at government sites outside office hours, and shifting deliveries and road services to off-leak hours.

Grech said that many of these solutions had already been proposed by the PN a while ago.
