Watch: You Said God Is Punishing Us With Bad Weather, Rosianne Cutajar Tells PN MP During Heated Abortion Bill Debate
A parliamentary debate over Malta’s new abortion bill got a bit heated last night after PL MP Rosianne Cutajar claimed that PN MP Karol Aquilina used God to back up his opposition to the proposed law.
“A campaign of deception and misinformation is ongoing in collaboration with people who have resisted all changes that took place in the past ten years,” Cutajar said in Parliament.
“They either bring up the excuse of morality and conscience or warn us that the ground will swallow us up.”
“Karol Aquilina even said [off mike] that God is punishing us by sending bad weather while we were debating this bill in Parliament. Look at how far we have degenerated.”
Aquilina stood up and stated on a point of order that he never uttered those words, although Cutajar kept on insisting that he did.
“Despite bad weather, rain and thunderstorms, we will continue working in favour of ensuring Malta has choice and freedom of thought,” she said. “It’s always sad to see a sensitive subject like this being used to score political points but we’re used to you now and no one takes you seriously anymore.”
The bill being debated will allow doctors to terminate pregnancies if they have reason to believe the mother’s life is at risk or her health is in grave jeopardy.
However, it doesn’t provide a legal definition for the term “health”, raising concerns that it could be open to abuse and result in the de facto decriminalisation of abortion.
In his speech on Monday, Aquilina argued that it is ironic that the government wants to pass this bill through Parliament a few days before Christmas.
“They want to rush this bill through Parliament before Christmas, coincidentally the day we will celebrate the birth of Jesus,” he said. “The PL government’s Christmas present to the people of Malta for 2023 is a law that will introduce abortion.”
