A 20-year-old supermarket cashier said she was motivated to address yesterday’s PN protest after seeing several people struggle to buy basic food items firsthand.

“I felt I had to address the protest because everyone is facing the [cost of living] problem,” Jade England told Lovin Malta.

“As I said in my speech, I work at a supermarket so I face the cost of living problem on a daily basis.”

She said customers have urged her to keep the bill below €20 or €30 because that’s all the money they had, while some have removed basic items from the cashier tray after realising they couldn’t afford them.

“Even when they’re wondering whether to buy a simple chocolate for a bit of pleasure, they tell you it’s better if they don’t buy it because they don’t have enough money. These small things are heartbreaking and make you feel you have to do something.”

England, an activist within the PN’s TeamStart youth group, delivered a fiery speech during her party’s protest in Valletta yesterday afternoon.

She repeatedly hit out Prime Minister Robert Abela, accusing him of “robbing her future” and pushing several youths to leave Malta for good.

“Robert Abela, you should be ashamed of yourself for forcing people to protest in the streets because you only care about yourself and those close to you,” she said.
