‘We Can’t Even Cook A Meal Without A Power Cut’: Santa Venera Resident Warns Of Low Voltage Problems

A Santa Venera resident has warned that his household has been experiencing up to 25-32 power cuts daily due to low voltage problems, and that even basic tasks have become impossible.

The situation has become desperate; we can’t even cook a meal or watch a movie without interruptions,” the resident told Lovin Malta. “Today alone, we’ve had 26 power cuts by 8 PM, and we expect more as the evening and night progress.”

“Is there any commitment from ARMS, Enemalta, or the ministry to address this unfair and frustrating situation in the coming days, or should we expect this to continue throughout the summer?”

He said that he filed a report with Enemalta and received a claim number on Friday, but called again on Saturday because the low voltage power cut issue persisted.

He said that Enemalta told him to expect a call to schedule an appointment but were unable to provide an expected time frame for the call.

“Yesterday, on Sunday, we had to leave the house due to constant power cuts between 2-5 PM. The house was lit up like a Christmas tree, unfortunately without any festive cheer. As of today, I have not received any calls from Enemalta,” he said.

“This morning, my personal electrician came over and disconnected the OVR to bypass this unbearable situation, despite the potential risks involved.”

Like other people who have reached out to Lovin Malta, the Santa Venera resident is concerned that the constant power cuts risk burning out his home appliances.

Several people have been suffering regular power cuts as a result of low voltage, with complaints coming in from all around the country – including Qormi, Żurrieq, Birżebbuġa, San Ġwann, Żurrieq, Balzan, St Paul’s Bay, and Blata l-Bajda.

In some cases, voltage has been reported to be as low as 190V, well below Enemalta’s 230V (±10%V) nominal voltage.

This is over and above the unplanned power cuts, often as a result of high tension, that has left large areas of Malta and Gozo without electricity for hours at a stretch.
