‘We Deserve Better’: Repubblika Head Calls Out ‘Exaggerated’ Roadworks

The current level of Maltese roadworks is “exaggerated” and is causing a great deal of stress, Repubblika President Robert Aquilina has warned.
“The exaggerated number of roadworks is a source of great discomfort to all of us and it is obvious that a serious general plan doesn’t exist,” he said.
“One must pass from one diversion to the other to get from A to B. What was meant to be the exception has become the norm. Roadworks go on for an exaggerated period, and it wouldn’t be the first time that as soon as works are complete on one road, new works start on that same road.”
“We are living in a permanent state of stress on the roads, and this is the fruit of amateurishness and arrogance. We deserve way better than this.”
Many ongoing roadworks are part of a project to upgrade Malta’s electricity grid in the wake of last summer’s disastrous blackouts. Over 70km of underground 11kV cables are being installed around the country, two new distribution centres are being set up in Naxxar and Siġġiewi, 45 new substations will be built, and several existing ones will be upgraded.
Do you think Malta needs a better plan when it comes to inconvenient roadworks?
