‘We Do Not Recognise Russia’s Sham Referenda,’ EP President Roberta Metsola Says After ‘Illegal Annexation’
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has insisted that the EU does not “recognise Russia’s sham referenda” which saw the annexation of Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.
Earlier today, President Vladimir Putin signed into force an illegal annexation of roughly 15% of Ukraine, the largest annexation since World War Two.
“People living in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson region and Zaporizhzhia region are becoming our compatriots forever,” Putin said.
In response, EU leaders, including Metsola doubled down on their support for Ukraine.
“We do not recognise Russia’s sham referenda. We do not recognise Kremlin’s illegal annexation,” Metsola said in a social media post.
“We stand with Ukraine whether that is with financial, military or humanitarian aid.”
“Whether that’s by supporting Ukraine’s EU path or by bringing the perpetrators of these war crimes to justice, we stand with Ukraine.”
“Because we know that in fighting for its freedom, Ukraine is also fighting for the values that underpin our way of life.”
“Now more than ever, it is the time to stand united, against the aggressor, for Ukraine, for our values, for our future.”
Earlier this month, the Ukraine forces began fighting back and taking back parts of occupied territory. However, Putin quickly responded by endorsing the referenda which happened within the space of a week.
He has now warned that any attacks on the areas will constitute an attack on Russian soil.
