‘We Lost A Giant’: Former Judge, Writer And Labour MP Phillip Sciberras Dies At 77

Former judge, Labour MP and poet Philip Sciberras has died aged 77.
“Today we not only lost our dear gentle dad, whose memories we will forever cherish, but also a giant who bequeathed the country and the profession he loved so much with his profound knowledge and wisdom in law and literature. His knowledge was boundless,” Andrew, his son, announced on social media.
“I cannot thank you enough for the values you instilled in me, and of course the stubbornness you instilled in my brothers and I,” prominent lawyer Lara Dimitrijevic, his daughter, wrote.
“You were not only our pillar, but a GIANT in our lives and in the lives of many other people.”
The Labour Party offered their condolences to Sciberras’ family, noting that he was also a revered author in his own right.
Sciberras served as a Labour MP under Dom Mintoff in the 70s and 80s.
Prime Minister Robert Abela lamented the passing, saying that he was “a thinker, a sage person and one of the country’s best legal minds”.
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said that the late jurist and writer was “an institution in and of himself”.
On the other political camp, The Nationalist Party offered its own words of condolence for the family in this difficult moment, for his work as a judge, as his literary achievements for the Maltese language.
A funeral will be held on Thursday 5th October at 3pm in the Parish church of Zebbug. Instead of flowers, the family have asked for donations to Hospice Malta.
