‘We Need A Leaner Government’: PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis

Labour MP Edward Zammit Lewis said that Malta requires a “leaner government”, including the abolishment of certain government entities, agencies and regulatory bodies.
Zammit Lewis spoke out after an inquiry blamed government bureaucracy for the 2024 death of Mirabelle Falzon, who was killed by falling rocks near the ruins of the Riħama Battery overlooking St Thomas Bay.
Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici found that repeated warnings by residents and NGOs about the state of the battery were lost in government bureaucracy, which allowed the building to deteriorate to a dangerous state.
He recommended that a single government entity be in charge of handling reports of buildings at risk of collapse, a suggestion Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to implement.
Zammit Lewis said that while Abela’s decision is a step in the right direction, there is more that should be done.
“We should streamline government entities, and not just in this sector,” he said. “Without hesitation, this should lead to fewer agencies, entities and regulatory authorities to form what is known as a ‘leaner government’.”
“This requires direct leadership from the Prime Minister but I’m convinced it will leave fruit.”
He also called for a one-stop shop policy when it comes to reports and enforcement, as well as a national coastal erosion plan.
PL MP Rosianne Cutajar also expressed solidarity with Mirabelle’s parents, who told a press conference that their daughter’s death could have been avoided.
“Their courage to speak out after losing their daughter in the prime of her life should encourage us to do what needs to be done,” she said.
“Warnings of danger and risk shouldn’t be ignored. Tragedies are avoidable if we work tirelessly towards the common good. We must continue modernising and reforming out country to slash bureaucracy. We need a system that takes immediate action as soon as dangers and risk are reported.”
