‘Don’t Bother Washing Your Windows’: Saharan Dust And ‘Blood Rain’ To Persist All Week

If your windows are looking a little grimy this week — don’t rush to clean them just yet.
The Malta International Airport’s Met Office has warned that a low-pressure system over Algeria is sweeping Saharan dust across the central Mediterranean, bringing hazy skies, reduced visibility, and the return of the dreaded blood rain.
With more showers expected throughout the day, your fresh car wash or window clean might be wasted effort.
“The unstable weather will persist into the week,” the Met Office said, adding that while rainfall and haze will dominate the next couple of days, a shift in airmass midweek is expected to improve visibility and eventually wash away the accumulated dust.
But it won’t be smooth sailing just yet. Strong winds from the west-northwest are set to pick up from Wednesday onwards, with weather warnings likely for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
As for temperatures? Things will start to feel a bit more like a typical Maltese March, with daytime highs of 17°C–18°C and night-time lows between 13°C and 14°C expected later in the week.
A spokesperson for the MET office also reportedly confirmed that the sand will continue to linger until Friday, affecting the air quality on the islands.
