The Health Ministry has launched a plan to safeguard residents of Malta from the upcoming heat wave set to see temperatures hit 40°C.

“Extreme heat can cause physiological damage that may lead to irreversible harm to vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, and brain. We are doing everything possible to prevent this and ensure no lives are lost unnecessarily,” Health Minister Jo-Etienne Abela said.

The government has launched a plan to address periods of extreme heat which includes early warning systems, a public awareness campaign, and an effective response by entities under the Ministry’s remit.

In collaboration with the Meteorological Office, the Ministry will implement an early warning system to alert the public about upcoming extreme heat events. These warnings will be sent via messages that will also include practical advice on how to stay safe during such periods.

In recent weeks, the Ministry also launched a public awareness campaign on the dangers of heat, offering practical advice on staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day, and limiting direct exposure to the sun during these times.

For vulnerable individuals, the Ministry has set up Day Centres that provide shelter from the heat. These centres will be available to people with specific medical conditions and access will be facilitated through the Primary Care Support Centre.

Abela further thanked all the specialists involved in drafting the plan – particularly the Superintendence of Public Health, the Office of the Commissioner for Older Persons, the Data Commissioner, and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer. He also expressed his appreciation to local telecommunications companies, who promptly agreed to send personalised warning messages with advice to all their clients in Malta and Gozo.
