‘Gozo First, Malta Later’: Islands Wake Up To Rain And Thunder Ahead Of Imminent Season Change
It might still be a warm August day, but Malta and Gozo woke up early this morning to overcast weather, signs of faraway thunder… and even rain in some areas, especially the North.
In a series of overnight posts, Facebook forecasting page Aġġornament tat-Temp tracked the first stormy system registered close to Malta, hitting southern Sicily earlier yesterday.
By midnight, a stretch of cumulus clouds brought rain between Malta and its northern neighbours, with the forecasting page predicting possible rain at around 6am when most of those clouds find their way here.
And just like clockwork, that’s exactly what happened.
At around 5.30am this morning, Gozo heard some of the first thunder in months, with the sister island taking some of the first rain in a very long time. Żebbuġ in Gozo was particularly hit, given it’s one of the highest points on the sister island.
Meanwhile, Aġġornament tat-Temp said mainland Malta could be next, so look out for that. And some rain had already started falling around 6.30am in the areas of Ċirkewwa.
Meanwhile, however, while a seasonal shift is imminent, we still have some ways to go, with the page reminding everyone that the new rain season only really kicks off on 1st September.
In fact, don’t expect to be taking out your jackets anytime soon, with today’s weather forecast still showing highs of 31°C which could feel as warm as 33°C.
