The Heat For The Last Week Of August In Malta Isn’t Backing Down

Summer 2017 in Malta has been one long and very hot rollercoaster, and it doesn’t seem like it wants to let go of those high temperatures even as August comes to a close. With many people seeing this week as the beginning of the end of summer, you’d expect some slightly lower temperatures. Well, it turns out you’d be wrong.

This week will see temperatures which still manage to be over 30°C, and when you factor in that good old (read: bad, very bad) apparent temperature, that number soars way up to 34°C right up to Thursday. Oh, and today’s sitting on a ‘Feels Like’ temperature of 37°C. The lowest temperature will barely make it under 25°C, so we’re not going to be getting particularly fresh evenings either.

Every cloud does come with a silver lining though, and Malta will actually be getting some clouds towards the end of the week. Pair that with slightly lower UV indexes of 8 and southern Force 3 winds which gradually go up to northern Force 4, and we might actually be getting a bit of a breeze by the end of all this after all.

This weekend also marks the first three days of September, and while temperatures are still in the 30s, it’s bound to get better with peaks of just over 32°C. Partly cloudy weather will also make its way back to the islands, and the winds will continue to intensify as the UV index drops. It’s almost like a whole new season is steadily making its way to Malta.

All this comes in the light of reports of a “big storm” coming to the Maltese Islands sometime later this month. Andrea Muscat, a young Gozitan man in charge of the successful Facebook Gozo Weather Page, had initially said a storm would probably hit Malta during the end of August or the beginning of September, as the result of ever-increasing sea temperatures. The last three times Malta’s sea temperature was this high, in fact, was in 2003, 2007 and 2008… three years which saw very big September storms.

This morning, a post on Gozo Weather Page explained how, even though “the transition to autumn is to continue” this week, “the annual September humidity will make the air feel stick at times”. Moreover, it seems like the forecast for the annual storm heralding autumn might’ve taken a backseat for now, with the post saying “heavier rain should arrive in the second half of the month.”
