IN PHOTOS: Last Night’s Lightning Show Over The Islands Didn’t Disappoint… Especially When It Came To Gozo

Malta continues to tranisition from hot, sunny weather to crackling thunder and torrential rain showers. Although forecasted for a couple of days, last night’s storm still left many perplexed by the sudden and early weather change which took the island by surprise during the later hours of last night.

Malta’s streets flooded as lighting cracked above and those who were out enjoying a lovely evening stroll quickly became victims of significantly bad weather and rushed for shelter. And after a slightly quieter spell just before midnight, the storm returned in the very early hours of th emorning.

While most people prefer to stay indoors during a thunderstorm, some brave photographers saw this as an opportunity to grab their camera and venture outside to capture the spectacular lightning show Mother Nature was putting on for us. And it looked like Gozo was the place to be.

This may be the last of the stormy weather for the time being, and now that it’s over, here are some of the most impressive shots from last night’s storm over the islands.

As time went on, the evening sky grew to a dark, cloudy grey, foreshadowing what was to come…

As the night crept in, Gozo and the northern parts of Malta were the first to experience the stormy and turbulent weather

And when it rains, it pours. Such was the case for these Gozitan streets which measured a whole 30mm of rainfall.

Photographers seemed to have no intention of sleeping and quickly scrambled for their wide-angle lens and a good vantage point to capture last night’s show

Despite a night of perpetual rainfall, come morning the storm left as quickly as it came, and the Maltese islands woke up to a new and fresh dawn.
