Lija, San Ġwann, And Birżebbuġa Feasts Disrupted Due To Strong Winds Over Malta

This weekend, the Maltese Islands experienced some strong winds that decided to crash our beloved parties, causing quite the commotion and disruption to numerous Maltese feasts in different localities.

Due to these Force 6 winds, the popular Ħal Lija ‘Is-Salvatur’ procession, which was scheduled for last night, has been postponed to 9th and 10th August.

Many enthusiasts who had been awaiting the big night weren’t very happy…

“10th August is the date for San Lawrenz and not Is-Salvatur! It’s the wrong decision to postpone it to Thursday, when there’s another feast, normally they are postponed to weekends, not middle of the weeks,” a Facebook user commented.

Whilst others disagreed:

A tough decision. But reason tells you that this is better (don’t worry, Thursday will come and you’ll celebrate),” another user said.

In preparation for the feast of St. Dominic in Valletta, the street decorations were also taken down to protect them from the strong winds.

And unfortunately, Saturday’s aerial display in Birżebbuġa, celebrating St. Peter in Chains, also had to be cancelled.

“After a long discussion, with a sense of responsibility, unfortunately it was decided that all fireworks that were to take place today, Saturday, in Birżebbuġa, will not take place due to the strong winds which have hit our country,” the Għaqda tan-Nar 22 ta’ Frar Birżebbuġa Facebook page posted.

The aerial fireworks exhibition that was supposed to take place in San Ġwann on Saturday, as part of the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, also had to be called off.
However, yesterday’s fireworks and celebration proceeded as usual:

Fear not, the natural order of the universe shall be restored – Malta is set to go back to the dog days, sun, and sticky weather in the next few days… and our feasts shall proceed.
