Malta Issues Extreme Heat Warnings As Temperatures Soar To 40°C

Malta is officially baking. According to the official Met Office, temperatures are set to hit a scorching 40°C today, feeling more like 42°C, with UV levels reaching a dangerous 10.
As the heatwave takes hold, locals have started receiving heat alerts directly to their phones. The alerts, sent via SMS as public safety warnings, advise people to stay indoors, avoid direct sunlight, and keep hydrated.
“Avoid direct sunshine. Stay in cool surroundings. Drink plenty of water often,” the messages read.
This heat alert system is part of a new public health initiative launched by Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela on 21st July.

The campaign includes not just mobile alerts, but also designated Day Centres across Malta for vulnerable individuals who need safe, cool environments.
The centres, coordinated by the Primary Care Support Centre, are aimed at supporting people with chronic health issues or those especially vulnerable to the heat.
While today and the next few days will be sweltering, some relief is in sight this weekend, with highs of 34°C on Saturday and 30°C on Sunday, thanks to a Force 5–6 northwesterly wind.
In the meantime: stay cool, drink water, apply sunscreen, and avoid being out in the sun during peak hours.
