Malta and Gozo have been drenched by unusually high rainfall this March, with the national mean reaching 74.8mm so far — nearly double the climatic norm of 40.3mm for the month.

After a dry start to the season, rainfall totals have now officially surpassed 400mm since 1st September, marking a strong recovery for this hydrological year.

According to Maltese Islands Weather, heavy showers earlier this week delivered a significant boost to the totals, with several localities recording over 30mm of rain between Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th March.

In Gozo, Victoria recorded 35.5mm of rain, closely followed by Nadur with 35.3mm. Għarb saw 30.7mm, while Għajnsielem recorded 30.5mm. Marsalforn received 28.0mm, and Xewkija had 27.4mm during the same period.

In Malta, Żurrieq topped the list with 43.2mm, followed by Dingli with 41.4mm and Żejtun with 38.6mm. Mqabba recorded 36.9mm, Fgura 36.1mm, and both Pembroke and Żabbar received 35.6mm. Buġibba followed closely with 35.1mm, while Siġġiewi measured 35.0mm. Mosta saw 34.8mm, Msida 33.8mm, and both Naxxar and Valletta recorded 33.0mm. Sliema registered 30.1mm, Marsaxlokk 29.9mm, Mellieħa 29.7mm, and Mġarr 29.5mm.

The widespread rainfall has helped compensate for the sluggish start to the season, providing relief to farmers and contributing to rising reservoir levels.

With spring now underway, attention turns to whether this momentum will continue or if the current rainfall spike will prove to be a short-lived surge before the drier months ahead.
