Polar Cyclone ‘Thor’ Set To Hit Italy And Malta With Cold Days And Stormy Weekend

Brace yourselves: it looks like winter might be finally about to hit Malta.

After a worrying long dry spell that closed off 2022 and an unnaturally warm week kicking off 2023, the Mediterranean is now about to get hit by a polar cyclone… and it’s aptly been named Thor.

The polar cyclone is expected to hit southern parts of Italy tonight, only to get more intense as the storm continues to form.

Thor is predicted to bring “abundant and stormy rainfall” to the southern areas of Lazio and Campania. By tomorrow, heavy rainfall is expected to hit Rome, with temperatures dropping under 10 degrees Celsius.

Being fed by “cold upper currents from the frigid polar lands” the cyclone is being described by Italian weather sites as one with a “truly disruptive and severe aftermath” – and at least a part of it will eventually hit Malta.

As for our tiny island, however, it doesn’t look like any particularly severe storm will affect Malta, even though the local page It-Temp Madwarna did explain that Thursday is expected to usher in “polar colds more typical of January”.

As of Friday, then, the cold is forecasted to also be joined by stormy weather, so keep that in mind if you’re making any plans for the weekend.
