Warning To Avoid Swimming Is Made As Malta Braces Itself For Strong Winds And Rough Seas

Hot summer temperatures have finally landed in Malta, but a brief spell of strong winds hitting the islands over the next 24 hours might prove to be the breath of fresh air many were hoping for. They might however also prove to be dangerous for swimmers, which is why some of the country’s biggest weather forecast pages have taken to warning their followers ahead of the weekend.

“The Northwest wind will reach up to FORCE 6 along with a ROUGH sea,” The Weather Page Malta told its 60,000 strong followers this morning. “We suggest NO swimming today! Let others know!”

Joining the announcement was a video showing the rough seas in Gozo making their way onto the street along the promenade. The post hit over 2,000 views in less than an hour, but the page is hoping even more people receive the warning.

“This video was not taken today,” The Weather Page clarified to Lovin Malta. But judging by the weather forecast, it’s very likely to be this bad very soon.

In fact, some Instagram videos over the last hours have already been giving a sneak peak into the choppy seas and gusts of wind set to bombard the islands over Friday.

The Malta International Airport’s forecast page has not issued any particular weather warnings for the rest of the day, and strong winds have become somewhat common in Malta this year.

However, seeing as it’s been a beautiful start to June and this weekend is a long one for many thanks to yesterday’s public holiday, more people are bound to have made some plans which involve the beach. Seems like it would be better to hold off on those plans for now.

The current forecast has today’s strong Force 5 and 6 winds calm down to 4, falling to 3 by Sunday.
