A Maltese boat was captured battling the rough storm last night during the 45th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race before the team succumbed to the harsh weather conditions

A 65-knot squall hit Spirit of the Winds – owned by Simon Xuereb – during the race and footage posted by Rolex Middle Sea Race shows the sailers skilfully navigating the towering waves and pouring rain.

“All the crew are safe and well and have retired from the race,” Rolex Middle Sea Race wrote on Instagram.

The harsh conditions caused minor damage to the boat including a ripped main sail which means the team was unable to continue.

The race commenced yesterday morning ahead of yesterday’s stormy weather when fleet was let loose from the Valletta Grand Harbour. So far, five Maltese boats have retired while the other 12 are going strong.
