We’re Safe: Severe Wind And Rain Currently Hitting Central Mediterranean To Miss Malta Despite Potential Showers

Article Featured Image

As severe weather continues to hit a number of ports and islands around the central Mediterranean, people in Malta and Gozo will be relieved to find out we should yet again be avoiding the brunt of what is currently making international headlines.

Last week, a severe storm hit Spain’s Balearic Islands, with winds in excess of 100km/hr being recorded in Port La Savina, Formentera.

Then, in the early hours of this morning, some of that seemed to have arrived in Sicily, with a tornado hitting the northern Sicilian fishing village of Santa Nicolicchia at around 4am, leaving chaos behind it, sinking one of the largest superyachts in the world and claiming at least one victim. Some hours later, a towering waterspout was spotted just off the southeastern coast of Italy, indicating that the weather might be heading north.

But as more and more shocking photos and videos emerge from the aftermath of the severe weather hitting the region, it’s important to note that Malta and Gozo do not seem to be in the path of destruction.

In fact, it appears as if today and tomorrow will be the worst as far as the wind strength goes… but even then, the northwesterly wind should never exceed Force 4 or 5.

Despite this, the islands might still get some isolated showers, with a couple of days this week potentially offering cloudy days and even some rain closer to the weekend.

As far as the temperature goes, however, this isn’t looking like it’s going to budge much, with highs that feel like 35°C still dominating most of the week.
