‘We’ll Be Waiting On The Edge Of Our Seats’, Family Say As Policemen Suspended In Connection To Maltese Man’s Sudden Death

Two policemen have been suspended in connection to the death of Richmond Tong, who died in dubious circumstances in a police cell in 2020, and Tong’s family has spoken out.

Speaking with Lovin Malta was Keelan Micallef, Tong’s cousin who, like many others close to him, was startled at the recent revelations.

“It was a shock to hear this,” he said. “And I hope we get a good explanation of what really happened. I hope that the individuals responsible will face justice.”

“I guess you could say that our family will be on the edge of our seats, waiting to hear more about the developments of the case.”

Tong died alone in a jail cell on 24th June, 2020, after he was left there following police searching him and finding what they suspected to be drugs. Soon afterward, he suffered a fit whilst in his cell, and was dead by 4am.

Tong’s death raised serious questions over the happenings of the night. At the time, an inquiry was headed by Magistrate Josette Demicoli investigating the incident.

At the time of the incident, Keelan said his cousin’s tragic death had “left a big wound in the family”.

Tributes had poured in remembering the 35-year-old for the love he shared with those around him, even in their darkest moments, and the joy he brought wherever he went.

Several in Malta, including the PN, called for an independent inquiry to see whether all protocols were followed and if his death could have been prevented.

Two years on, two police officers now face criminal charges following recent developments in the case.

Proceedings shall begin in the coming days, under Magistrate Doreen Clarke. At this stage, no further information has been given regarding any recent developments in the case, so as not to hamper the course of justice.
