A poignant photo taken by a Maltese front liner capturing what healthcare professionals worldwide are going through has been selected by the World Health Organisation as their photo of the month.

The image had originally gone viral after being shared on Facebook by a Maltese nurse with the caption: “This is us. We are on the frontline. We are fighting this war against an invisible enemy.”

It has now been chosen by WHO Europe to mark the International Day of the Midwife and as a powerful visual representation of the global battle against COVID-19.

“Nurses and midwives save lives and make a critical contribution to global health. In the coming week, join us in saying thank you to all nurses and midwives for improving people’s health,” WHO said alongside the image.

May features two days dedicated to recognising healthcare professionals for their hard work and dedication.

As the international organisation celebrates these brave workers, now is an important time to remember why the photo was shared.

“Your actions can either help us or wreck us,” the Maltese nurse had said. “So please, please stay at home. You aren’t stuck at home, you are SAFE at home.”
