Pelin Kaya is the 30-year-old Turkish woman who has simultaneously stolen and broken the nation’s heart, after being at the centre of a horrifying fatal car crash.

But beyond just knowing her name and what she looked like, who was Pelin?

Speaking with Lovin Malta, one of Pelin’s closest friends has painted a picture of who she was as a person, what her story, dreams, and aspirations were, and how she even ended up in Malta.

Pelin was born in Turkey in 1993, the youngest of three daughters.

With her elder sisters being quite older than her, she is said to have grown up under the protection of three women, with Pelin being very close to both her mother and her father.

Following a fruitful and promising childhood, Pelin then moved on to her studies at Istanbul University, where she pursued architecture within the Department of Industrial Design.

After completing her studies, she started designing for Nike in Istanbul, one of the world’s leading sportswear companies.

When she left Nike, Pelin decided to come to Malta to learn English, as she always wanted to learn new skills that could help the development of her career.

Pelin had spent some time studying English in Malta when she fell in love with the island and decided to completely move and establish herself here. Her favourite Maltese beach was Riviera, and she loved watching sunsets from the spot.

She had aspirations to become a successful architect and was passionate about design, hence why she was working as an interior designer in Malta.

She had been living in Malta for almost two years and was residing in Gżira, the locality where she was murdered on her way home after celebrating her 30th birthday with some of her friends.

Her closest friend continued to describe her as a “beautiful person inside out, and the happiest person in her big family”.

“She was always smiling and helpful to others in need of help, a great image of a smart and strong woman.”
