Widespread Power Cut Hits Various Maltese Localities Over Night As Heatwave Rages On
A widespread power cut affected various localities all over Malta last night as the island’s first heatwave for the summer rages on.
The power cuts, which happened throughout last night, left many residents unable to sleep or cool themselves without any electricity to power fans or ACs.
From the northern areas of Malta, to the very south, many localities were impacted, including Żebbuġ, Sliema, Naxxar, Mosta, Żurrieq, St Paul’s Bay, Siġġiewi, Luqa, Marsa, Qormi, Rabat, and Fgura.
Multiple Enemalta workers were dispatched at the dead of the night to resolve the issue. It appears that although there were a few scheduled power cuts, they also occurred due to an overload on the electrical system.
“Due to the extreme weather conditions, coupled with an increase in the load or request for electricity, a number of faults on the high voltage infrastructure have occurred. These faults encompass multiple substations and hence effect a lot of consumers at one instant,” Sliema Mayor John Pillow said.
“I am informed that multiple gangs have been deployed by Enemalta to address the issues but obviously these will take their time to repair. Whilst we are all eager to have the supply back, we cannot but thank Enemalta’s employees for their commitment regardless of weather conditions.”
Residents reported that some power shortages went on for as long as eight hours, with others getting their electricity supply back after a few hours.
Meanwhile, certain places, such as areas in Naxxar, are still without any electricity this morning.
